Series nameRam Gopal: 1950s
Description

Kay Ambrose was a dance illustrator and balletomane. She accompanied Ram Gopal on his dance tours in the 1940s and 1950s, as his Artistic Director. She spent her career sketching dancers, their costumes, off stage and on stage scenes, and studying the intricacies of classical dance techniques. Ambrose returned to India with Ram Gopal and furthered her sketches and studies of the rudimentary aspects of Indian classical dance. She also met renowned dance Gurus and their pupils and attended performances. This book, entitled ‘Classical Dances and Costumes of India’, is the product of Ambrose’s research into classical Indian dancing. It features an introduction written by Ram Gopal, and numerous detailed sketches and images of dance postures, movements and costumes.
