The ten images in this item depict Suniti Namjoshi’s innovative book, ‘Building Babel’. The book was published in 1996 by Spinifex Press in Australia. In Namjoshi’s Babel, the roles of time, memory and death (Crone Kronos, Madame Mem and Death) in the process of building culture are explored. The concern is with process and the way in which cultural fragments or ‘memes’ e.g. Little Red, Snow White, Queen Alice, and Cinders, mutate. In this book the author invites readers to contribute to the building of Babel through a specially designed website at www.spinifexpress.com.au/babelbuildingsite the digitised images include the front cover, contents pages and a three-page extract from the body of the text.
