Series notesTara Arts' production 'The Little Clay Cart' is an adaptation of an 8th century Sanskrit play by Shudraka, called The Toy Cart. The play is a complicated love triangle and tells the story of a king who falls in love with a courtesan who in turn is in love with a poor merchant. Tara Arts followed Sanskrit dramatic practices such as using minimum props, incorporating dance and music sequences, a and opening the play with a Sanskrit invocation to the Gods. The cast of Little Clay Cart include: Shaheen Khan, Nizwar Karanj, Mala Sikka, Yogesh Bhatt, Bhasker, Ayub Khan Din, Sudha Bhuchar, Rezaul Kabir. The production team for Little Clay Cart include: Director, Jatinder Verma, Music, Baluji Srivastav, Choreography, Shobana Jeysingh and Design, Mala Sikka and Ann Hubbard. In 1984-1985, the production toured the following venues: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, 11-14 and 18-22 December; Asian Centre, Haringey, 4 January; Park Lane Community Centre,6 January; Oval House Theatre, 9-13 January; Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, 15-17 January; Fleet Education Community Centre, London, 25 January; Arts Centre, York, 31 January-2 February; Roadmender Centre, Northampton, 6 February; Moat Community College, Leicester, 7-9 February; Southall Arts Centre, Southall, 16 February and Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham, 21-23 February. In 1986, the play opened at the Arts Theatre in Leicester Square in London on Thursday, 9 January and in 1991, The Little Clay Cart premiered at the National Cottesloe Theatre in 1991.
