British Relief Woodcarvings – Book

Series nameExhibitions & Catalogues
Description

This book compliments an exhibition of eighteen contemporary British relief wood carvers. The exhibition was organised by The Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport, England in Autumn1987. The British Wood Carvers Association defines relief woodcarving as “mid way between sculptural woodcarving and a picture…it has depth but also relies on perspective”. This unique exhibition displayed the work of woodcarvers who developed contemporary imagery through the ancient tradition of woodcarving. The eighteen images of this book include the foreword, written by internationally renowned art critic and historian, Edward Lucie- Smith, an introduction written by the selectors of the exhibition, Peter Murphy and Christine Kowal Post, as well as the pages which feature Juginder Lamba’s work. The front cover illustration is of “Two Figures – Caught in the Wind”, by sculptor Richard Perry (1985).
