Description

Trophies of Empire’, was a national project which which took place in 1992. The project commissioned fifteen artworks in the maritime cities of Bristol, Liverpool and Hull. Artists were invited to “creatively and innovatively response to their own individual interpretations of colonial legacies and events through artworks that directly and poignantly reflect both the physical and geographical locations of the project against the backdrop of 1992 with its myriad implications…” (taken from ‘Trophies of Empire’catalogue, 1994). Exhibitions comprising mixed media installations, video, sculpture, paintings, and photography were held at the Arnolfini in Bristol, Bluecoat Gallery in Liverpool and Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. The year 1992 was significant for the project as it marked the Columbus Quincentenary and the advent of European unification. This six-page A5 black and white pamphlet was produced for the ‘Trophies of Empire’ exhibition held at the Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool and included the work of artist Shaheen Merali, Veena Stephenson, Rita Keegan, Paul Clarkson and Juginder Lamba.
