In this scene from Tara Rajkumar’s 1981 production of ‘Ramayana’, the ‘mudhra’, or hand gestures, are illustrated. Rajkumar is depicting one of the main characters, Sita. Within all forms of classical Indian dance intricate hand and facial expressions are integral to conveying the story line of a dance performance. On this occasion, Rajkumar used large images as a backdrop to her solo performance.
