Series notes | Shobana Jeyasingh choreographed two new dance pieces in 2002, 'Hinterland_ and Phantasmaton'. 'Hinterland_' was a site specific creation which transformed the 1930s interior of Greenwich Town Hall with film screens, internet links, live singers and dancers. It also included a live web-cam transmission from the balcony of Bangalore's Park Hotel where Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company dancer Chitra Srishailan, performed the dance. Simultaneously in Greenwich, UK, prolific dancer Mavin Khoo and the rest of the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company performed the same dance. The production aimed to depict time travel, time zones, memory and displacement. The production 'Phantasmaton' was concerned with the interchange. Presentations of changes included live dancers interchanging with video relayed dancers and live music in between recorded music. Pre-recorded electronic music was also played over live traditional Arabic vocals of renowned singer Natacha Atlas. Phantasmaton was co-commissioned by East London Dance as part of a residency in East London and previewed at Stratford Circus,London on 1 February 2002. 'Hinterland_ and Phantasmaton' were performed at Greenwich Town Hall and The Place Theatre, London from 5 - 8 March 2002. |
