Series notes | The idea for the play Singh Tangos emerged from one of Kali Theatre’s workshops. Playwright Bettina Gracias depicts the cultural and social pressures facing the Singh family. When Mrs Singh decides to take ballroom dancing lessons to sample English culture, the rest of the family make their objections very clear. Their son Tej rejects his parents’ western attitudes and focuses on becoming a doctor while their daughter, Cassie, insists on having an arranged marriage. Mrs Singh is played by Siddiqua Aphtar, Tej by Imran Ali, Cassie by Pooja Ghai, and Mr Singh by Kaleem Janjua. The production team includes: Director, Caroline Ward, Designer, David Blight, Lighting Designer, Douglas Kuhrt and Composer, Troy Banarzi. The play was performed at the Derby Playhouse on 25 April, 2002 and then moved to Leicester and the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. |
Collection notes | The Kali Theatre Company collection consists of digitised material which fall into two categories: items which relate to Kali Theatre’s productions, such as programmes, flyers and photographs and material which provides information about workshops and outreach programmes. |
