Asian Elders’ Theatre Campaign – Article

Series nameProject Development
Description

This is a copy of an article which appeared in the “London Age “, on 13 December 1996. Mán Melá ‘s artistic director, Dominic Rai was involved with Age Concern Southwark as their Development Worker. As part of his remit, Rai brought together Asian elders in the local community to participate in reminiscence activities which resulted in plays that raised awareness of mental health issues in their own language. The plays were a great success as the audience could relate to the real life issues in the play via the characters in the safety of a group environment. This article looks at Rai’s scheme to promote positive mental health in the community and the role of the theatre performances in it. The scheme was called ‘Asian Elders’ Theatre Campaign’, and was a model of how theatre could be used to open up a dialogue with senior citizens.
