Series notes‘Azadi: The Story of Freedom’ was produced by Mán Melá in 1997, to celebrate fifty years of independent writing in India and Pakistan. The multimedia show featured the writings of Indian, Pakistan and British poets and novelists including, Meera Syal, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, Faiz Ahamd Faiz, Hanif Kureishi, Anita Desai and Rukhsana Ahmad. The production also featured actress Mina Anwar, scholar and playwright Shamsuddin Agha, renowned sculptor Nek Chand and the music of Baluji Shrivastav. Azadi was held in various venues in London throughout September and October 1997. The production toured the rest of the UK in 1998, and featured contemporary writing from a new generation of writers.
