Mán Melá produced this black and cream pamphlet for a multi-media theatre production about the life and work of prolific novelist Dr Mulk Raj Anand who currently lives in Mumbai. Directed by Dominic Rai, the production was entitled ‘The Untouchable Century’ and featured scenes from a selection of Mulk Raj Anand’s novels and stories since 1935. Following a preview tour in 1999, Mán Melá toured this production nationally in 2000. ‘The Untouchable Century’ cast featured Razia Ayub playing Virginia Woolf, Dev Sagoo as Mulk Raj Anand, Maureen Hibbert as the Movement Advisor, Baluji Shrivastav as the Musical Director and Balraj Khanna as the Artistic Advisor.

Series notesThe Untouchable Century was a major multi-media show produced by Mán Melá between 1998 and 2000. Directed by Dominic Rai, it portrayed the life and work of the ‘father of modern Indian literature in English’ - Dr Mulk Raj Anand, who currently resides in Mumbai. Anand lived in Britain during the wars and knew all the major literary figures of the day including T.S Eliot and Virginia Woolf. The Mán Melá production included extracts from Mulk Raj Anand’s 1935 novel, Untouchable, about twenty-four hours in the life of an Indian lavatory attendant, and Across the Black Waters depicting the tragic fate of the Indian soldiers in World War One. The digitised material in this file includes leaflets, flyers and programmes from the Untouchable Century tour, which also provide background information on the Mán Melá cast and crew as well as historical facts and biographical information on Mulk Raj Anand.
